The West Highland Way is one of Scotland's most famous long-distance walking routes. Stretching over 96 miles from Milngavie to Fort William, it offers stunning views, rich history, and a chance to connect with nature. For many, the idea of hiking this trail can seem daunting, especially when considering the costs involved. However, with the right planning on our part and some creativity, you can experience this breathtaking journey without breaking the bank.
In this post, we will explore budget-friendly itineraries for the West Highland Trail. We will provide practical tips, highlight affordable accommodation options, and suggest ways to save on food and transportation. Whether you are a seasoned hiker or a beginner, this guide will help you make the most of your adventure.
Planning Your Trip
Before you hit the trail, it is essential to plan your trip carefully. Here are some key points to consider:
Choose the Right Time: The best time to hike the West Highland Way is from late spring to early autumn. This period offers the most favorable weather conditions.
Duration of Your Hike: Most hikers complete the trail in about 6 to 8 days. If you are on a tight budget, consider hiking a shorter section of the trail. This way, you can still enjoy the scenery without the costs associated with a longer trek.
Transportation: Milngavie is linked to Glasgow by a frequent 23 minute train. Baggage transfer begins in the station car park.
Fort William offers a train link back to Glasgow Queen Street. The 4 hour train ride has been voted the most scenic train journey in the UK.
City Link and Ember are two bus companies which offer an affordable bus route to Glasgow or Edinburgh.
Semi-private return transport: We work closely with Baggage Freedom to offer you not only the best in baggage transfer but also a (dog friendly) mini bus ride back from Fort William. Perfect if you need to get back to Glasgow on your last day of walking.
Budget Accommodation Options
I started West Highland Walkers as I felt that this amazing trail should be within everyones reach regardless of their finances. We specialise in bespoke budget itineraries using the best hostels and bunkhouses in Scotland.
Hostels
Hostels are a great way to meet fellow travellers. The hostels along the trail offer dormitory-style accommodations as well as private rooms. Some popular options include:
Rowardennan Lodge Youth Hostel: Located on the trail, this hostel offers a friendly atmosphere, amazing staff and stunning views across Loch Lomond.
By The Way Hostel: Situated just past the halfway point, this hostel provides private rooms, mixed dorms as well as glamping pods and camping.
Blackwater Hostel: Found in the beautiful Kinlochleven, Blackwater offers private rooms with en suite as well as glamping pods and camping.
B&Bs and Guesthouses
For a more comfortable stay, consider bed & breakfasts or guesthouses. While these options may be slightly more expensive than hostels, they often include breakfast, which can save you money on meals. Some budget-friendly B&Bs include:
Hill View: Located in Drymen, this charming B&B offers a warm welcome, comfortable beds and the perfect host.
Allt na Leven: Situated in Kinlochleven, this guest house provides home from home comforts, cosy rooms and a great breakfast.
Eating on a Budget
Food costs can add up quickly while hiking. Here are some tips to help you save on meals:
Pack Your Own Snacks
Before you start your hike, stock up on snacks and easy-to-carry food items. Consider packing:
Trail mix
Energy bars
Dried fruit
Sandwiches
These items are not only budget-friendly but also provide the energy you need for your hike.
Shop at Local Stores
As you pass through villages along the trail, take advantage of local shops and grocery stores. Buying food from these stores is often cheaper than dining out. Look for:
Fresh produce
Canned goods
Ready-to-eat meals
Enjoy Pub Meals
After a long day of hiking, treating yourself to a meal at a local pub can be a great way to relax. Many pubs offer hearty meals at reasonable prices. Some popular options include:
The Clachan Inn: Located in Drymen, this inn is known for its delicious food and welcoming atmosphere.
The Oak Tree Inn: Fabulous inn on the banks of Loch Lomond. Lots of outdoor seating for those summer nights.
The Drovers Inn: Renowned inn on the Way, this historic inn serves traditional Scottish dishes at affordable prices.
Highland Getaway: Situated in Kinlochleven, the Highland Getaway serves great pub grub overlooking the River Leven.
